Weight-loss teas, detox teas and general wellness teas are all the rage right now on Instagram. I’m so involved in this “world” that I’m not even sure if they are actually a thing outside of that as well! πŸ˜‰ A while ago, I was contacted by GymTea, an Austrian start-up, that makes an all-natural tea mixture. GymTea is supposed to help you with energy and boostΒ your metabolism. I recently saw a tea based smoothie on Instagram, so I figured, let’s make a GymTea based Energy Smoothie with it, so this review is more fun!

First off, what’s in the tea? There is green tea, oolong tea, lemongrass, mate tea, rooibos, ginger, cinnamon spearmint and stinging nettle in the mixture. Well, no wonder the tea should give you energy, there is caffein in green tea, oolong tea and mate tea – so if that doesn’t wake you up, I don’t know what will! πŸ˜‰

I didn’t drink it for any weight-loss reason (and GymTea isn’t a dedicated weight-loss tea anyway), and also not before working out, but I actually took it with me when I went to university, in order to get over the dreaded afternoon slump.

  • Did it work? Yes!
  • Did all the caffein make me jittery? No! I was worried about that, but I guess the caffeine in the tea is absorbed more slowly and I also drank it over the whole afternoon (I usually take a 1 liter bottle with GymTea with me), so it just made me awake, but not hyper.

One word of caution though: don’t drink it before longer car journeys, or anywhere, where you don’t have a bathroom: it will definitely make you go pee more often! Stinging nettle and mate tea are both ingredients that help your body let go of water…and I could definitely tell that I was getting up a bit more frequently than usually (not to a point where it was annoying though). For the taste, well – I tried the classic version and that is nothing special: just like green tea with a herbal note. Definitely not unpleasant. Oh and as always, yes, I got sent the tea for free. BUT all opinions are my own and honest!

To make this review a little bit more fun, I figured I create a delicious, GymTea based Energy Smoothie with it. I’m new to tea based smoothies, but they are so good! This one is a banana, strawberry, mint version. I added in the mint, because the tea has already some spearmint in it and I wanted to amp up the flavor. This smoothie can be enjoyed for breakfast, as a refreshing snack, or you could even add protein powder and drink it after working out!

Ingredients
  • ½ cup hot water
  • 1 heaping tsp Gym Tea
  • 1 handful mint leaves
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1 handful almonds
  • 1 heaping tsp chia seeds
  • 2 tbsp oats (optional)*
Instructions
  1. Steep the tea in the hot water for about 4 minutes and let it cool.**
  2. Put almonds, chia seeds and oats in a blender and blend until fine.
  3. Add the tea, frozen fruit and mint and blend until smooth. Enjoy!
Notes
* Adding in the oats will make it a light breakfast - you could also add in some neutral protein powder, to drink it after working out!
** It doesn't need to be ice-cold. The fruit is cold enough, so the smoothie will still be refreshing.

I love my chia seeds – we go way back when I still had to order mine online from the U.S. because they were just simply not available here in Europe at all πŸ˜€ So curious what you will make with chia seeds!

    1. It tastes really good – you should really give it a try! You could also just start adding green tea to a smoothie, it’s wonderful. Lots of people also just add matcha powder to their smoothies, which is amazing too πŸ™‚

  2. I’ve never thought of using tea in a smoothie! I love coffee in my smoothie, but I am not much of a Tea drinker. I would love to try this GymTea though!!

    1. It’s a pretty new concept to me as well – although I have mixed matcha in my smoothies before, but as I just add the powder, I didn’t think of it as adding “tea” πŸ˜€
